The First Contact: Giving Hope to Families

How do you give families hope when they first reach out for help? By changing the very first conversation. This course explores the critical role of the first contact between a professional and a family who may be overwhelmed, discouraged, or already blaming themselves for their dog’s behavior. Instead of rushing toward “fixing” the dog, Emily Brandt shows how thoughtful intake structure, careful language, and a welfare-first lens can help families move out of crisis thinking and into curiosity.

Grounded in the L.E.G.S. framework, this talk gives professionals a practical way to gather better information, reduce shame, and begin building trust before the first formal consultation even happens. Participants will learn how the earliest moments of communication can shape realistic expectations, create safety for the humans, and set the stage for more ethical and sustainable outcomes for dogs and their people.
