Damaged But Not Broken: The L.E.G.S. of Deaf & Blind Dogs
How can we support deaf and blind dogs in living full, safe, and meaningful lives? This course explores the L.E.G.S. of dogs with sensory differences and the practical ways professionals and families can protect both safety and welfare. Deaf and blind dogs are often underestimated, but with the right support, they can build confidence, navigate their environments, and enjoy rich relationships.
Participants will learn how to set up environments that reduce confusion, encourage resilience, and provide predictable information through the senses the dog does have available. The presentation also looks at communication, consent, handling, startle concerns, and how individual learning history and health influence each dog’s needs. The goal is to help professionals see deaf and blind dogs as capable individuals who may need thoughtful accommodations, not lowered expectations for quality of life.
