L.E.G.S. Model as a Framework for Centering Welfare in Companion Dog breeding

What does it mean to breed dogs for modern family life? This course explores the challenges and opportunities involved in centering welfare in companion dog breeding. As more families seek dogs who can succeed as pets, breeders and professionals need a clearer framework for understanding temperament, suitability, phenotype, and the realities of modern homes.

Using the L.E.G.S. model, this presentation examines how Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Self can guide more thoughtful breeding decisions and better support for puppies and families. Participants will consider what “pet temperament” really means, how genetic tendencies interact with environment, and why welfare must be part of the conversation from the very beginning. The goal is to help professionals think beyond appearance, labels, or market demand and toward dogs who are better matched for the lives they will actually be asked to live.
