L.E.G.S.-Y Learning Spaces: Designing a Learner Friendly Environment

How does the space around us shape learning, behavior, and emotional state? This course explores L.E.G.S.-Y learning spaces and the importance of designing environments that support both human and non-human learners. The spaces we enter can create feelings of safety, fear, excitement, calm, curiosity, or indifference, and those feelings directly influence whether learning is even available.

Participants will examine how animals and people manipulate their environments to meet physical and emotional needs, and how professionals can be more intentional when setting up learning experiences. This presentation looks at sensory input, predictability, choice, pressure, and environmental arrangement through the L.E.G.S. framework. The goal is to help professionals create spaces that reduce unnecessary stress, support agency, and make learning more accessible for the individuals in front of them.
