Living In The Stone Age: Archaic Shelter Models, Toxic Work Environments and the Profound Effect These Factors Have on Our Dogs
What happens to dogs and shelter workers when the system itself is outdated? This course examines archaic shelter models, toxic work environments, and the profound effect these factors have on the welfare of dogs in care. Changing shelter environments requires more than asking individual workers to do more with less; it requires better compensation, improved facilities, transparency, and systems that support both animals and people.
Participants will explore how shelter structure, staffing, stress, public trust, and organizational culture all influence outcomes for dogs. This presentation challenges the idea that shelter behavior problems can be solved through behavior work alone when the environment itself may be contributing to suffering. The goal is to help create shelter systems that truly serve the dogs, the workers, and the communities depending on them.
